Parabens and their effects on health

Paraben is a chemical compound used in cosmetics, personal care products, and some medications. It was first developed in the 1950s as synthetic preservatives. It plays an important role in extending the shelf life of products and preventing the growth of microorganisms (bacteria and fungi). The most common types are methylparaben (E218), ethylparaben (E214), propylparaben (E216), and butylparaben.

While paraben helps products remain stable for a longer period, there are debates about its potential dangers. In recent years, research has increasingly highlighted concerns about the effects of parabens on health. In some countries, the use of parabens within safe limits is regulated, but sometimes consumers prefer to choose products that do not contain parabens.

Paraben is mainly considered to cause the following concerns:

Hormonal disruption: Paraben acts as a chemical compound that mimics estrogen in the body. Therefore, it is also referred to as an endocrine disruptor. Paraben can particularly cause problems related to the menstrual cycle in women.

Cancer risk: Some studies have shown that exposure to high levels of paraben can increase the risk of hormone-related cancers in women (such as breast and ovarian cancer). These studies are still ongoing.

Allergic reactions: Some people's skin is sensitive to parabens, and the chemical compound can accumulate in the body, leading to allergic reactions. This can manifest as redness, itching, or eczema-like symptoms. Long-term use can also lead to dry skin or other issues.

Reproductive health effects: Some studies suggest that the accumulation of parabens in the body can affect sperm quality and count in men. In women, parabens can pass through the placenta during pregnancy, potentially affecting the fetus. Research also suggests that parabens may negatively impact the development and normal functioning of newborns.

To avoid the alleged harms of parabens, consumers are recommended to use products labeled "paraben-free". Choosing paraben-free products is considered a safer option for some people.
